Our History

The first physician to serve the settlers of the St. Peter area was Dr. Hiram Wesley Catlin. A medical school graduate of the University of Louisville in 1850. He arrived in St. Peter in 1855 and served the settlers until his death December 26, 1861. Dr. Asa Daniels, surgeon and an advocate for the Dakota Indians, arrived in St. Peter in 1861 following his service at Ft. Ridgley and as medical officer at the Lower Sioux Agency. When he arrived in St. Peter he cared for the sick and wounded in a makeshift hospital, the Ewing House (Brinkman’s Apartments) located on the corner of Third and Walnut Streets.

The first medical facility in St. Peter was The Home Sanitarium operated by A. Kloss. In 1927 Dr. W. W. Covell, a World War I Surgeon purchased the Theodore Knoll building (currently Patrick’s) at the corner of Third and Park Row. He opened a 20-bed hospital, and added an additional floor and 8 rooms in 1931. The facility closed in 1938. In 1935 a second hospital flourished and was operated by Cora and Leonard Hughs, it was known as the Cora-Lee Hospital.

In 1938 the City of St. Peter opened a new 38-bed facility at the corner of Washington and Broadway, and in 1959 added a 45-bed addition known as the East Wing.

In 2004 the new St. Peter Community Hospital opened on August 8 at 6 p.m. The campus encompasses approximately 26 acres, the size of the hospital is 62,000 sq ft and the project cost was $15.6 million; of which $1.3 million was from community pledges. All 17 rooms are private. It is the first hospital in Minnesota to feature Wellness patient rooms, which feature new Sanijet Pipeless Whirlpool baths. River’s Edge Hospital is also the smallest Mentor Hospital in the nation, having received more than 1,000 inquiries about its quality improvement initiatives.

In the fall of 2008, the hospital changed its name to River’s Edge Hospital & Clinic to reflect the growth of the health care campus. The River’s Edge Clinic opened as a department of the hospital April 2009 and is located in the medical office building which comprises almost 25,000 sq. ft. The total project cost is $6.2 million.
